Quick tips to record better quality audio for business videos

One of the areas that is often overlooked when recording business videos is the audio quality. As a result while the rest of the video may look amazing – it may not sound great, and that can affect its overall quality and make it appear less professional.

Needless to say that is a mistake that you don’t want to make, which is why you should use the following tips to ensure you’re able to record better quality audio for your business videos:

Use a high quality external microphone of the right type

Microphones are not built equally, and the built-in microphones on most video cameras leave a lot to be desired. In short if you want to record high quality audio alongside your video, you should invest in a high quality external microphone.

Keep in mind that there are many different types of microphones available. For example a lapel microphone may be perfect for a voiceover, whereas a shotgun microphone may be better so that you can capture all the sound coming from a certain direction.

Record the audio separately

If it is an option it is always best to record the audio separately. That way you can record in a much quieter location, or even in a studio if you want to be certain the quality is great.

For business videos that are narrated with a voiceover, this may be the best option – as it will let you take all the steps you need to produce the best audio quality.

Try to reduce the background noise

When you’re recording audio it is important that you try to minimize the background noise as much as possible. Ideally it is best to record in a location that is completely quiet, but if that isn’t an option you should remove as many sources of background noise as you can from the equation.

Be particularly aware of any electrical appliances that may be nearby, as they can often produce a humming noise that you may not even notice but will affect the quality of your audio.

Keep the microphone completely still

As far as possible you should try to keep the microphone still while you’re recording. That will help you to avoid the telltale rustling or crackling noises that are often caused by the microphone brushing against something or moving through the air.

The exact methods that you use may differ, but for lapel microphones you should firmly attach them but keep the microphone away from the clothing – whereas for other microphones using a stand of some kind can help.

Naturally it is possible to improve the audio in post-production as well, and the simplest way is to use platforms such as MP3 cutter to trim out poor quality bits of audio and replace them. If you have a more advanced audio editor however, you could adjust the sound levels and apply background noise filters to try to improve it. That will take some experience however, which is why recording high quality audio from the get go is generally easier.
