Making the most of your first small office space

You might not be able to afford the biggest or most luxurious premises when you’re first starting out in business, but you can make the most of what you’ve got.

A pleasant workplace is beneficial for you, your staff and can create a good impression on customers or clients that come into your office too. Here are some of the ways you can make the most of your first, small office space.

Redecorate

The first thing you should do when you get the keys to your small office space is have it redecorated. Freshen up the walls with a coat of paint, light neutrals like white, magnolia or very light grey are a good choice. Not only will these look professional, but the space will look bigger and brighter as the light is easily reflected around.

Companies like Wilton Carpets offer heavy contract carpet which is ideal for commercial use, so once it’s fitted it will stand the test of time. You could have some custom signs or create interesting displays relating to your business put on the walls, and add living plants which add colour and texture without looking fussy or cluttered. Research has even shown that plants boost mood and productivity in the workplace, so they’re well worth incorporating.

Get the lighting right

This is something that lots of people can overlook, but its crucial to get the lighting right in the workplace. Not only can dimly lit corridors or corners pose a health and safety risk as people could trip or fall from not being able to see hazards, but it can also cause other issues too. Eye strain, headache and migraine are common from the wrong lights being used, and they can also create a dingy atmosphere. Experiment with the colour tone and brightness of the lighting in your small office. Where possible, position desks close to windows so workers can get the mood-boosting effects of the natural daylight.

Choose good furniture

You and your workers will be sat at your desks for a significant part of the day. So something that’s comfortable is so important. You need chairs that offer neck, back and lumbar support, and desks that are spacious and sturdy. Don’t just go out and buy the cheapest items you can find just because you’re on a budget. Scour discounts, deals and second hand bargains. Offices often sell all of their assets when they upgrade or go bankrupt so as a newer business you can cash in here.

Create an area for staff to relax

Finally, even if you only have a small space, a place where your staff can sit before work and on breaks is beneficial. It could just be a small kitchenette area with some chairs, or some comfy chairs and a coffee machine in the corner of the office. They won’t have to leave the office to go on their breaks, and it can help with socialisation and therefore teamwork in the office.
