Office décor ideas: Desk decoration for the office

Going to work doesn’t always mean you need to leave your personal identity at the door.

Many employers will allow their staff to have personal items present in their office so long as they are not distasteful or offensive. In addition to this, some types of desk decoration can help to positively bolster your emotions and mental wellbeing, which can be especially important if there are challenging or stressful aspects of your job role.

Having posters up in your workspace not only allows you to add a splash of colour to the walls, but it can also remind you of why you are in the role to begin with. While you could choose to buy standard stock items, creating a durable plastic poster of your family, favourite imagery, or even motivational and inspirational quotes, can go a long way towards keeping you focused on what you are doing. These items are also lightweight, meaning they could be taped or tacked to your walls, or even pinned to your noticeboard. Due to them causing less permanent damage than if an item required screws or pins, there is also potentially a greater likelihood of your company permitting their usage.

Having items that both make you feel happy and provide a purpose can also be a great way to decorate your office. These could involve crystal or glass paperweights to ensure your items stay in place, decoupaged paper trays, or even homemade pen pots that you could make yourself, or even get your children to design for you. By thinking more about your workplace needs, including things that will improve your organisation, you can combine these ideas with items that can be crafted or purchased to show off more of your personal tastes.

Cushions

Just because you are at work, that doesn’t mean that you need to sit in discomfort. While your chair may even be of a high standard, supporting your posture while you work, it might feel too hard, as well as lacking the kind of designs and styles that you prefer. Instead of leaving it as is, you could choose to add to the existing office furniture that your company has provided you. One of the simplest ways to achieve this is to create your own cushion covers based on designs that you like, or even to match the existing colour scheme of the office as a whole. If you are lucky enough to have other seating in your space, such as sofas or armchairs, you could also adorn these with similarly designed cushions, to extend that feeling of comfort and relaxation to those who might share the space with you.

With permission from your employer, you can come up with some great, ingenious ways to make the space feel more like your own. Other than your comfort, desk decoration can also benefit you by making you feel more like your own person, rather than simply another employee, which can do wonders for your self-esteem and feelings of worth in the office.
