Asia Pulp and Paper: A Sustainable Solution for the Future
Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) is one of the world’s leading producers of paper, packaging, and tissue products.
They are also committed to developing innovative solutions for a sustainable future. As a company that operates across 12 countries in Asia-Pacific, APP has been looking at ways to turn waste materials into new energy sources and raw materials. And they’re not the only ones who have been making investments in sustainable solutions. Here are just some examples of how other companies are trying to find new ways for paper production
Asia Pulp and Paper(APP)
Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) is one of the world’s leading producers of paper, packaging, and tissue products. They are committed to developing innovative solutions for a sustainable future, which includes turning waste materials into new sources of energy and raw materials. Some other companies that have invested in sustainable solutions include:
Kappa Printing Solutions – The Netherlands
The Dutch company Kappa Printing Solutions developed a machine that is capable of turning plastic into printing ink. This process saves up to 80 percent on the costs of running a printer, reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent, and eliminates the need for toxic solvents.
Nordic Paper – Norway
Nordic Paper has taken the approach of finding new ways to recycle pulp from used newspapers and magazines. The company uses its technology to recycle up to 90 million tonnes of waste annually. They then use this recycled fiber in their production efforts for 100 percent recycled paper products.
Waste to Energy
One way for APP and other companies to reduce the impact their paper production has on the environment is by turning waste into energy. APP Coal Power (APP-CWP), which operates in Indonesia, uses coal to produce electricity. The company generates electricity from coal without burning it, which reduces emissions. This technology is not just one that’s exclusive to Asia Pulp and Paper; Cemex is another company looking at this type of solution. It’s estimated that 10 million tons of CO2 are reduced by Cemex every year because of this initiative.
Sustainable Paper Production
Innovative companies across the world are looking for solutions to help solve sustainability issues. And APP is one of them. APP has been exploring different ways that they can help to reduce their environmental impact and find new sources of energy for the future. In 2015, APP partnered with the National University of Singapore (NUS) to explore ways that they could turn waste materials into new sources of energy and raw materials. The goal was to use waste such as sawdust or palm oil mill effluent as an energy source while also using it as a raw material in the paper-making process. This would allow APP to reuse these waste products and convert them into useful resources instead of simply disposing of them at a landfill.
