Why Chris Hemsworth is a great example of diversifying your portfolio
When you’re tall, handsome, have a great body and an Australian accent, then you really don’t have to worry about much in life.
When you’re Chris Hemsworth and have all of the above, then you’re basically flawless. However, the movie star has shown lately that he isn’t afraid to take chances in his career.
It would be pretty easy for an actor like Chris Hemsworth to never stray far from the movies which simply require a tough guy with a serious attitude, as it’s fair to say that many of his previous characters have had this disposition (Thor, Blackhat, The Cabin in the Woods, Snow White and the Huntsman, In the Heart of the Sea, 12 Strong). Nonetheless, here is an actor who has recently been displaying his ability to delve a little deeper into his repertoire and find out what he’s capable of –outside his comfort zone.
This type of mentality is important for anyone in all walks of life, but particularly entrepreneurs and freelancers who require a comprehensive and diverse portfolio to show to others when the need arises. When Hemsworth presented his comedic chops in the 2016 remake of Ghostbusters, he proved a few things to the world. One, that he wasn’t afraid to play a supporting role, and two, that he could perfectly deliver some hilarious lines and play a not-so-clever character. Also, Thor was never known as the funniest Marvel character, yet in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, Hemsworth had many hilarious slapstick moments and took the character in a daring, new direction.
Comedic roles to offset his more grim, stunt-focused characters is one thing, but no one could have foreseen just how far Hemsworth was willing to go in terms of changing things up a bit. In his latest Marvel blockbuster, Avengers: Endgame, Hemsworth’s popular character, Thor, (SPOILERS) goes through a bit of a physical adjustment, let’s say. Although his admirers across the world would have been a bit dismayed to see a fat, beer-drinking, and insecure version of Thor (following a rather traumatic series of events, it has to be said), the decision not to show his impressive abs and biceps was a bold, but necessary move for the actor.
In terms of life outside of movies, Hemsworth naturally has his wife and three children to spend time with, but there are a few companies he has to keep happy with endorsement deals. Hugo Boss makes sense as a collaboration, as the longstanding fashion house’s marketing campaigns are bolstered by the use of the charismatic and good-looking star’s image. Tag Heuer, too, is an easy one to digest, as an incredible number of watches are sold online and Hemsworth’s choice – the Carrera – is understandably front and centre of Chrono24’s section for the Swiss watches. What’s perhaps most interesting is Hemsworth’s involvement in the movie-but-actually-a-tourism-advert for Australia in which he, and many other big stars, fooled everyone in 2018.
If all that didn’t endear you to Chris Hemsworth already, then his dedication to keeping his kids and himself humble after fame and fortune is quite remarkable. In an interview with GQ, the actor discussed how he still wants to instil a sense of hard work and dedication for his children. “I don’t want them to feel like they’re privileged in any way,” said Hemsworth. “The fact that we have money and their parents are famous, that somehow they’re special, that scares me because we grew up with no money. I remember saving up for a surfboard when I was younger. The surfboard was 600 bucks and I saved up for a whole year with Dad’s help. I didn’t even want to surf on it for fear of damaging it. It taught me so many lessons about appreciation and working hard for something.”
Chris Hemsworth’s next comedic role will be in Men in Black: International, released June 13th 2019.
